Memo: Shipbuilding costs could face 'major' increase

An internal government memo warns that the national shipbuilding program is facing “major cost escalations” that could limit the number of ships built and what they can do.

The undated memo was written before Irving Shipbuilding of Halifax won the $25-billion contract for navy combat vessels in October 2011.

The document is heavily redacted but shows that bureaucrats and the industry were worried that the $35 billion allotted in total for that contract and two others would not be enough money.

“The major issues currently bedeviling government shipbuilding are major cost escalations that far exceed project budgets and therefore (affect) the number of vessels, delivery timing and capabilities of the ships procured,” the memo says.

The Reform ideology of the Conservatives has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they lack both experience and competence at managing the countries affairs. Stephen Harper and his ship of fools are doling out taxpayer dollars to industry without adequate study and evaluation of the projects.

When confronted with their failures they respond by engaging outside advice again spending taxpayer dollars to try and justify their failures.

In the real World we fire idiots like Harper, Flaherty, MacKay, Ambrose, Kenney, Moore, Fantino and others for their abuses and failures to perform, but we must endure 2 more years of dictatorship at the hands of a group who don't have the intellectual capacity and experience of a school teacher or lawyer.
