More opportunity for Harper to lie to Canadians

Harper’s tough choice on new fighter jet for Canada

A document that was supposed to help Stephen Harper achieve his goal of buying F-35 fighter jets may make his choice more difficult.

Now Harper is caught between a rock and a hard place. He can hardly ignore an options analysis that was created as the escape route from a major scandal. Aerospace companies, journalists, opposition politicians and perhaps even the U.S. government will demand to see the new document.

Conceivably, opening a competition among the manufacturers could create another, politically useful delay.

But Harper rigged the options analysis to favour the F-35. If the Air Force has played up the strengths of one model of aircraft, this will make the need for a full-blown competition difficult to explain.

The Prime Minister has left himself with just one option. He has to make a decision on replacing the CF-18s. And that, sadly, might lead to Canada buying the wrong plane.
