Harper simply doesn't care about your rights and freedoms

Chantal Bernier on the terror bill — too far, too fast?

In stating its purpose, to “encourage and facilitate the sharing of information among Government of Canada institutions in order to protect Canada against activities that undermine” its security, Bill C-51 is raising concerns with respect to the right to privacy. These concerns arise mainly from its provisions to:
  • Increase authority for departments to share personal information;
  • Broaden powers to track and monitor suspects, and;
  • Increase surveillance powers without increased oversight structure.
Parliamentarians must give careful consideration to this bill. The worst thing that could happen would be for it to be passed quickly.

Bill C-51 must be considered in light of what is demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society. That means the bill’s legitimacy must be assessed according to empirical evidence of need, proportionality of privacy intrusion to that need, cogent arguments of effectiveness and the lack of a less intrusive alternative.
