Your tax dollars wasted again.... Harper and company pissing into the wind

Government spending millions on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube ads


Members of Parliament may flock to Twitter, but when it comes to getting the message out, Canadian government departments ‘like’ Facebook.

According to documents tabled in the House of Commons, the Harper government spent $1.6 million over the course of only three months earlier this year to advertise or promote itself in ads on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Xbox. If it spends at the same rhythm throughout the year, the federal government is on track to spend $6.3 million to advertise on the four platforms alone in 2015.

Facebook garnered the lion’s share of federal government advertising, cashing in on more than $719,913 worth of sponsored posts between Jan. 29 and April 29. Twitter was next with more than $552,742, followed by $303,998 for YouTube. Xbox trailed the pack with $7,170 – all of which was advertising for the Public Safety Department’s anti-cyberbullying campaign.
