Rescue in the Amazon

My cousin Joyce, husband Garth and their daughter Amber with son in law Willy on a recent trip to a jungle retreat and canoe trip on the Amazon River encounter a serious accident enroute, here is Doctor Willy L's account

On the way to Banos, a military truck and 2 cars collided in front of our bus. 3 nurses and myself and several others ran out to extricate the trapped and seriously injured baby and 4 adults. Blood and shattered glass everywhere.....

After we got the trapped baby and 4 adults out from the grey car, then the ambulances and fire truck arrived.

2 adults and a baby trapped in the front, and 2 adults in the rear. Took us a while to get them all out, before the ambulances arrived. Our good deed of the day.

The extrication, rescue and medical team - 2 RN from Edmonton, 1 NP from Saskatoon, 1 pharmacist from New Mexico, the accountant and his wife, tour guide & our driver. Amber, and me with the appropriate T shift from June Grundy.

Dr. Willy L is second from the right with the "Keep Calm - The Doctor" T shirt. He is best known as Ralphie B's former GP but also is head of NASCAR Canada's medical team as well as being a coroner here in Ontario and assists heart surgery in Hamilton in his spare time.

And God Created Canada ...

On the sixth day, God turned to Archangel Gabriel and said, "Today I am going
to create a land called   Canada .

It will be a land of outstanding natural beauty.  It shall have tall majestic mountains
full of mountain goats and eagles, beautiful sparkling lakes bountiful with bass and
trout, forests full of elk and moose, high cliffs over-looking sandy beaches with an
abundance of sea life, and rivers stocked with salmon."

God continued, "I shall make the land rich in resources so as to make the inhabitants
prosper, I shall call these inhabitants Canadians, and they shall be known as the most
Friendly people on the earth."

"But Lord," asked Gabriel, "don't you think you are being too generous to these Canadians?"
"Not really," replied God.  "Just wait and see the winters I am going to give them!"

Forbidden Ad: Networks reject Friends’ TV spots

Feb 25, 2015
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Toronto - All the major Canadian TV network and station owners: Bell, Corus, Québécor, Rogers and Shaw have refused to air Friends of Canadian Broadcasting TV ads that satirize Stephen Harper for his hostile agenda towards the CBC.

“The ads the networks do not want Canadians to see are meant to hold the Harper government to account for the damage it has done to public broadcasting in Canada,” says Friends spokesperson Ian Morrison.

Before being submitted, Friends’ ads were approved by the Television Bureau of Canada, an industry consortium that screens proposed TV ads to ensure they meet industry standards.

In addition to Canadian networks, Friends approached a number of US border stations including in Burlington/Plattsburg, Vermont; Bellingham, Washington and Buffalo, New York, to carry the ads.  Each of them also declined to run the ad.

Friends did not offer the ads to the CBC/SRC because of the public broadcaster’s refusal to air Friends’ previous ads.

“In Canada, the decisions of a small handful of corporate executives have shut down legitimate discussion of an issue salient to Canadian public opinion.   If free speech and public debate is a cornerstone of a democratic country, Canada may now be on shaky ground,” Morrison said.

Friends has shifted its advertising to several online properties.  The ads are also available to Canadian television viewers on some English-language specialty channels, as well as NBA and Leafs TV.

“These ads satirize Mr. Harper as a Prime Minister who will stop at nothing to control, punish and silence critics, a characterization that many people may find accurate,” Morrison said.

In the ad, a Harper aide, tied to a chair that is sinking in a body of water, shares his thoughts with viewers about his predicament.  He had the temerity to urge the Prime Minister to go easy on the CBC, and is now being punished.  On his descent, he recognizes a colleague who is suffering the same fate.

“Through budget cuts, partisan appointments to the CBC Board, and new powers, the Harper government is trying to control and silence our national public broadcaster, the CBC.

“But he can’t drown us all out. The vast majority of Canadians, including Conservative supporters, hold the CBC in high regard.  These ads are being released as a wave of protest grows across the country against the Harper government’s hostile agenda toward the CBC,” Morrison concluded.

How Harper's disastrous diplomacy crushed Keystone XL

President Obama's veto of the Keystone XL pipeline bill is nothing less than a devastating indictment of Stephen Harper's foreign policy.

Despite the imperative that Canada diversify our access to foreign markets, no relationship is or ever will be more important to this country's fortunes than the one it has with the US, and most of all, the White House.

But the weight of Harper's ambition and ego brought that historic relationship to its knees, and with it, the prime minister's own defining economic and foreign policy objectives.

Canada's leadership lost its credibility and moral suasion at the White House by being drawn into the poisonous scorpion's nest of DC politics. No foreign leader, but especially not the Canadian prime minister, can afford to be seen to meddle in American domestic affairs.

Stephen Harper managed to do it.

Indeed, its hard to imagine a more disastrous economic and foreign policy strategy than the one adopted by this prime minister. As Barack Obama entered the final period of his presidency, the indications were clear that climate change would become a pillar of his administration. John Kerry, well-known as a strong environmentalist, is Secretary of State, and holds the portfolio responsible for the Keystone decision.

Cardiovascular Exercise for us older people

THIS IS NOT AS EASY AS IT LOOKS

Pass to all 50 yrs. and older & anyone else who could benefit.

Cardiovascular Exercise

The older we get the more important it is to incorporate exercise into our daily routine. This is necessary to maintain cardiovascular health and maintain muscle mass.
If you’re over 50, you might want to take it easy at first, then do more repetitions as you become more proficient and build stamina. Warning: It may be too strenuous for some.
Always consult your doctor before starting any exercise program!

The 41st Parliament hits bottom

This Parliament appears to be a lost cause

Shortly after three o’clock this afternoon, Michael Chong’s Reform Act passed the House of Commons by a vote of 260-17. Even in its amended form, its passage—the Senate must now approve the bill—is worth celebrating. Even if not quite the leap it might’ve been, it is still now a small step toward what might be considered a better Parliament: one in which each of the individuals we elect, not simply the leaders of the various parties, is significant and, as a result, the legislature is a truly robust forum for debate, study and accountability. Of course, there are very many steps left between this and that.

Should the bill receive royal assent, it will be something for this Parliament, our 41st Parliament, to claim credit for. But it will be for the next Parliament to make something of. Which is perhaps fitting because the legacy of this Parliament—its contribution to a more perfect democracy—might depend entirely on whether its gross failings inspire its successor to commit acts of change.'

That there are as many as seven more months left in the life of this Parliament almost doesn’t matter. That it exists is unquestionably a good thing and that it counts among its member any number of remarkable and inspiring people should not be forgotten and that it might sit until at least June will provide some benefit to the nation, but so far as it might’ve been something more, this Parliament now looks to be a lost cause.

Clement defends $2.3 million to photograph cabinet ministers

Treasury Board President Tony Clement is defending the government’s more than $2.3 million tab to photograph cabinet ministers, saying the photos are part of the government’s obligation to communicate with Canadians. “The government of Canada has an obligation to communicate with the public and we take our responsibilities to taxpayers very seriously in this regard,”...
